would the:
Gainward BLISS GeForce 7900 GS SILENT 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-041-GW)
Price: £144.99 (£170.36 Including VAT at 17.5%)

be better?

I know the Ds4 has problems with Gskill HZ, so you better confirm with someone else its ok.

7900gs @ 145 - go for the x1900xt 256

Does it have to be GSkill memory.

Plenty good 965 and 975 boards out there . Depends on what ** friend wants it to do at the end of the day.

Spose branded memory is good.

Look if ypour friend want to over clock all the cobos are good. Some better some worse.

If 6300,6400 the 965 chipset works better

If 6600,6700 the 975 chipset works better

Chose Processor, Choose MB to buget, blow the rest on memory and graphics

Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (CP-126-IN)

You can play about with the above spec. E.g. you have enough budget left for a DS4 if you need it, or E6400 for that extra multiplier:

Intel Core 2 DUO E6400 "LGA775 Allendale" 2.13GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (CP-127-IN)
£164.49
Gigabyte GA_965P_DS4 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-062-GI)
£123.36
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) (MY-058-GL)
£176.24
Connect3D ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (3056) (GX-047-CO)
£223.24
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB ST3320620AS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD-078-SE)
£73.97

Total inc VAT: £761.30

Still within budget.

My point is, if that was my £800, I would get the best graphics card possible as it's far easier to make a low-end CPU perform like a high-end one by overclocking than it is to make a low-end graphics card perform like a flagship one (granted X1900XT isn't flagship, but close enough). So, overclock the E6300/E6400 and spend the rest on a better graphics card (GS is good, but X1900XT is better :))

well i don't think he intends to o/c and i don't think he plays the most graphic demanding games

so if i got a cheaper graphics card and expensive cpu would that be any good?

Oh, I assumed it was a gaming rig. In that case, I suppose you should just get a card that will be adequate for his needs, X1900XT might be overkill for him.

What exactly is the rig going to be used for?

ah for internet and gaming like but he doesn't play to newest games atm so i was thinking the:

BFG GeForce 7900 GS OC 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-033-BG)

is this not a pretty good card? but isn't to pricey
