The Q9550 is currently not being used, so I am going to sell it on, it works perfectly and overclocks well, I am just looking to bring my current gaming rig up to speed.

If said gamer doesn't overclock what's the point in K +P67?Show me the statistics stating that every gamer overclocks.

Honestly from looking at it....i probably should increase my budget a little. Its not a big deal, its just something i'll have to work out. Thankfully I'll be selling up my Q9550 around about the same time so that could pay for a good cooler. And yes I overclock, I really would not except anything other than a K model
I think that is wise, given how long you are going to have the system, it is worth a little more.
Fair enough about the overclocking, tbh you didn't need to mention it as the majority of gamers today overclock anyway

This is what I decided I'll probably end up going with, so now is the question, what cooler should I get for overclocking the i5. All that I ask is that it is quieter than my Freezer 7 pro
A closed water loop cooler (such as a H50 or an Antec Kuhler) are near silent with the right PWM fans.
Air cooler wise, the Venom is quiet, and the more expensive Thermalright Silver Arrow has the potential of being near silent (with it's stock fans its a mere 19dBa)

hmm. suprised about that. I have one, and find it almost inaudible.
I haven't even bothered to set up a fan profile, as it's so silent. I leave it on about 70% idle
The Akasa Venoms are supposed to be very quiet form what i hear, never used one though, so someone else will probably know best.

From what I read its overkill for even the i7-2600k
it's pretty much overkill fullstop
tbh, given how cool SB's run, & they do, ide be inclined to go for something less herculean, i mean, i'm currently using an old Thermalright Ultra 120 on my SB at 4.5GHz, and thats with a damn quiet Nexus 22.8dbA/36CFM fan on it.
