CPU or GPU update....

Cheers for all your help chaps - puts some faith back in forums!

I think what I might do is try and push the CPU a bit further, and see how that goes. Have a slight burning hole in the pocket, so could go for the 5850, and see how the CPU market pans out in the next 6 months or so.

Thanks again guys!

Rich

I think I seen someone mentioning Q6600 G0 stepping 2nd hand are going at around £70-£80 now, so it's not impossible to pocket one along with a new 5850 at a total of around £300. There's also the Q9550 option, but think it is still around £150 even in the 2nd hand market.

This is defo a best of both worlds solution if you feel cpu limited after the gpu upgrade and can't wait to upgrade your board/ram/cpu

Yea. Shame it is a P43 motherboard, not a P45 board such as the P5Q Deluxe you mentioned...as they are known to be much better overclockers in general than the P43 or older or xfire/SLI chipsets, especially for Quads. Hell, even I want a P5Q Deluxe for my Q6600 too lol. I got my crappy nforce SLI board back in the days when I was still a noob about motherboard and knew nothing about the importance of chipsets and models of boards, or even overclocking
