Building a new system very soon and just need a little advice on clocking my cpu.

Going to be using a core 2 6850 with pc 6400 crucial ballistix memory on a asus p5k delux mboard.

My questions are, do i need to overclock my cpu to mach the 800mhz memory?

If so,
1. how much by?
2. how do i do it?
3. will i need an uprated cpu cooler, which 1 for around £30-£35?
4. will it be stable?
5. what speed will my cpu be running at?

Sorry for all the qustions.

You can set the memory to run at its rated speed without having to touch the CPU's speed.

You don't have to, but why not? It's free performance.

If you run the RAM at 2:1 against the CPU then when you start the CPU will run 1333MHz and the RAM will run 667MHz (2:1), so you can go up quite a long way before you hit the rated speed of the RAM (800MHz is 1600QFSB or 3.6GHz if the CPU will take it).

Basically, you set the overclocking options to manual in the BIOS and increase the FSB in small amounts until the PC stops booting. Then you turn it back a little and get it to boot again and then you stress test it. Read the official P5K thread for more detailed overclocking instructions.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-039-TR is an absolute bargain at the moment. Superb cooler. You'll need a good fan to mount on it though - try this one. It's not the cheapest, but it will plug straight in to the motherboard CPU header under PWM control. If you need to economise, then I would switch to the Gigabyte P35-DS4 or the Abit IP35-Pro, both of which are a bit cheaper than the ASUS, clock just as well (if not better) and have pretty much all the features of the ASUS.

It will be stable at some point, it just depends how good your overclocking skills are, and how good the CPU is.

From other threads, 3.5-3.8GHz seems pretty realistic with an E6850, P5K and a Thermalright Ultra 120-Extreme.

Once you get it all up and running, leave it for a few days before you overclock it, just to be sure it's all OK. Then have a dig about in the BIOS and when you get stuck, ask again. It's actually all very straightforward once you get your head around it.

Thanks for the info, if i were to chage to one of the mentioned boards, which is the better of the two and i would also loose my wifi what wireless/wifi card would i need to connect to my netgear router

I have them all  and the DS4 is the easiest to work with, the IP35-Pro is the outright best overclocker and the ASUS has a few driver issues. If you want a nice easy to work with, stable board then the DS4 is the way to go, I reckon.

As for a wireless card, they should all work, but if you have a netgear router then buy a netgear card to match eg. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-011-NG&groupid=46&catid=116&subcat=220 if you have a 802.11g router, http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-022-NG&groupid=46&catid=116&subcat=220 if you have a 108Mbps 802.11g router and http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-080-NG&groupid=46&catid=116&subcat=220 if you have a Rangemax router.

If you need to save a few pennies, then http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-007-BE&groupid=46&catid=116&subcat=220 will work just fine.

Any views on the Tuniq Tower 120 or Thermaltake BigTyp 120 VX CPU Cooler?

Both excellent - but check the fit on the Tuniq with the P35 boards. The Tuniq is potentially better, but the Thermalright wipes the floor with both of them.
