Ok, so my old pc keeps shutting down and on reboot gives me the message the cause was a CPU overheat, sometimes it then stays on, sometimes it will then die again.

Basically after taking the case apart i have found the fan and heatsync are clogged with dust i have loosend it with a paintbrush but as i have important things to do on there now, is it safe to use a hairdryer on cold to blow the dust off?

Cheers.

Bad idea. Hoovers generate a hell of a lot of static.

LMAO! Which then flows through the pipe into your PC and kills it! The static is generated by the motor in very small amounts and is grounded via the earth in the hoover anyways.

I use it all the time, I use a paint brush and the hoover and, no problem.

Wrong. The static is caused by the air going through the nylon nozzle at great speed. There have been quite a few threads on here about people killing pc's by hoovering them out.

+1 to this, nylon is horrific for static, you can generate some crazy static using nylon tubes. infact plastic period is pretty bad for static! would recommend using compressed air personally, thats gave best results for me! :)

The brush actually did it for me, i didn't need to blow it out, i just dug all the dust out of the heat sync and after being able to finish what i was working on tested out one of my games and saw a huge FPS boost.
