CPU overheating randomly

In the past few weeks the CPU (i5 2500k/standard intel CPU cooler) has been overheating randomly. Most the time I just have Firefox & Winamp open and the CPU usage is like 2% or something so I'm not using any CPU intensive programs.

However my computer will freeze and when I restart I get the error saying CPU is over temperature (it says it's up to 77 degrees!) then I have to wait 5-10 minutes for the CPU to get down to 60 degrees in order to restart.

I have turned all the fans to turbo mode with Asus Utility. So I have no idea what's wrong.

Any solutions guys? Thanks!

you could try removing and resetting your CPU cooler. Just remember to use some new thermal paste.

I would suspect the cooler is not sitting properly as well.

Wipe clean the old paste with surgical spirit, and replace with some decent thermal paste and resit the cooler.

Download Coretemp and monitor the temperatures.

You have to be careful mounting the stock cooler sometimes the pegs don't go in the holes fully.
