CPU overheating?

Hi all, looking for a bit of help with my new system. It's only about a week old but seems to be running very hot.

CPU seems to idle at about 30degrees C. when i prime95 test it, it shoots up to 80 degrees C within a few seconds. Surely somethings wrong there as i've not even overclocked it yet and am told it can easily reach 4.5?

Here is my cpu and heatsync
Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - OEM

Corsair A50 High-Performance CPU Cooler (Socket AM2/AM3/LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366) [CAFA50]

Just wondering if anyone knows what the problem could be?

hey, if the cooler is working 100% properly and is attached correctly and you are still getting those temps may be a dodgy chip. if you havent already make sure the cooler is attached correctly with any thermal paste needed etc.

hi, heatsync is fitted correctly and air flow seems good. got two front fans and two top fans sucking in and 1 back fan blowing out. also the heatsync fan is blowing cold air through the metal bit of the heatsync towards the back fan. any other ideas?

I might be able to help with this becuase I have the same cooler and the same CHIP. If you see my other post I have had trouble becuase I put my cooler on the wrong way but ATM is still working ok and giving temp in the region of 15 to 31 cecius when idle. If you could post some pics of the inside of your machine that might really help.

it sounds like either paste and/or cooler was not fitted properly.
i would do a remount, to check how the paste was applied.
remove the cooler and check the spread pattern on the cpu, this can tell you a lot.
how did you apply the paste?
usually a grain of rice size amount on the cpu, then push down cooler and tighten it.
some users say having the fan sucking in cool air from the back of case works best with your cooler. (but you need to check)

back of case/fan/radiator/fan -> with air following the direction of the arrow.

also as above, use the top case fans as an exhaust.
front and side fans as an intake

Sounds like the paste, the thermal sensor is only in core no.1 so if the paste isn't spread right across the chip correctly you can get high temps. I used the factory paste already on the heat sink and was in the high 60's. I re applied half decent paste in the grain of rice method and gave it a good press to make sure it spread even. Now my CPU never exceeds 40's under load with same cooler and config
