Lo folks, advice needed:

bought a 3700 (KACAE, fingers crossed) but it comes with thermal paste already - Do I:

i. Remove that and add AS5
ii. Add AS5 on top of that (that cant be good)
iii. just leave well enough alone ffs and use the paste thats on it.

I intend to oc with an aim to get to 2.6, the fan is an arctic freezer pro so I want as much benefit as poss.

charz.

I always thought you should remove the one that comes with the hardware and apply the new one but don't listen to me wait for someone to come and confirm/reject it :)

After market thermal compund is supposed to be better than the stuff already on the bottom of the heatsink. So make sure to remove the original stuff before applying the AS5. :)

To be honest, if it's metal based (shiny grey) leave it, AS5 will net you about 2C so unless you want to do serious clocking it's not worth it.

If it's silicone based then clean it off and use AS5.

Yup I'd use the normal stuff on the stock cooler if I was using that, its not going to make enough difference to be worth changing.

I just bought a B-grade Akasa evo 33 heat sink which has a dull grey coating over the copper end and was wondering what the best way of removing it is?

I find white spirit and cotton buds works well. Once used water on a hsf fan and it came out all blotchy, ah noob.

In any event thanks for the replies, in the end I installed the bleeding fan the wrong way round so had to pull it up and turn it round with metal paste all over the place, now I figure ill just pull it up again, clean it and put down some AS5 as ive botched it so badly.

Finally, my sig is probably the greatest computer ever built, ill never forget Elite on the BBC B.

If you can get it, isopropyl alcohol is the best cleaner, don't mistake that for nail varnish remover as that has other stuff added to it which ruins the surface of the HSF (also gets you a clip round the head from the missus  )
