computer won't boot after a new build, need urgent advice. On the 8 pin psu connector, the ports don't match up fully.

e.g. the female on my z97 is:

bottom rounded square - square - square - bottom rounded square
square - bottom rounded square - bottom rounded square - square

but the mail 4+4 pin from my psu has 6 x bottom rounded squares (sorry i don't know how else to explain them) and only 2 squares. is this why my pc won't even post?

Hi it would probably be easier for you to take some photographs. Make sure everything is seated properly and that your not trying to plug the cpu 8 pin into the gpu or the other way around

EDIT the 4+4 pin sounds more like the CPU motherboard connector but once again this will be easier to tell with photographs ( CPU pins tend to be 4+4 pin or just 4 or 8 pin ) whilst gpu cables tend to be just 8 pin or 6 + 2 pin

thank you so much for your reply.

see both pictures below. If you try to slot the male cable into the female, it doesn't look totally compatable?

EDIT: If the cable you are trying to plug into the motherboard matches the PCIe 8 pin layout on this diagram then no that wont work as i thought you need to plug the cable that is EPS-12V into the motherboard pci wont work in there

that's what im explaining is that apparently my psu doesn't have an eps-12v? It's a CoolerMaster GX-Lite 500w

Post a picture of all the PSU connections and we'll be able to tell you which one you need :)

Or just unplug everything and put each one in until the correct one comes up and fits in the hole.

There's no molex wires that would fit in that. the only other one is my 6+2 and 6+2 molex wire but that's for my gtx 970.

Thanks soooo much lads for giving me what i need here :D :D :D :D going to look in the box i got my psu in to check if it has the EPS 12v

they put out a completly different amount of power and voltage to a different set of pins....the 4+4 on the left is not the same as an 8pin PCIE connector.

If the 4+4 doesnt fit try switching the 2 blocks of 4 and make sure the peg clip is facinf the correct way for the socket, ive done it before where ive tried to plug it in and got frustrated to then discover i had 1 half of the connector facing the wrong way

Check the first picture I posted above that's the way I have it

It's the modules I'm worried about for example in my scenario a little square module is being plugged into a square with 2 rounded corners

Your first picture was removed by admins, upload it to photobucket or something then post it again :)

Ok, no pictures necessary, just see below please.

1) I'm using the only wires on the PSU that has CPU wires (all the other ones are being used currently).

My motherboard slot is shaped like this:

My 2*4 pin is shaped like this:

[)[)

The question is, will my 2*4 (which makes up a pcIe I believe) be compatible with the motherboard slot posted above even though the modules are different?
