yesterday, i was minding my own business when KABAM, my pc freezes.

rebooted as standard, and my originally overclocked at 3.6ghz e6600 had reverted back to 2.4ghz (according to cpu-z)

tried to overclock again, but to no avail. my mobo on start up was saying 3.6ghz, control panel (system bit) was saying the same, but cpu-z was only coming up with 2.4ghz.

it had got the 400fsb right, but still had the multiplier as 6x rather than the 9x i had set it to in BIOS. in fact, from time to time it would miraculously jump from 2.4 to 3.6 for a second or two.

now, the machine won't boot if i try the same overclock, and cpu-z is now only saying i'm getting 1.6ghz.

help? :(

what could it be?

please save your witty remarks for someone else.

i did bother, yes. would just like a little point in the right direction. i.e wtf is speedstep?

ok, it's the EIST thing. it was already disabled.

tried to boot with 400x9 but it just won't work. won't take the fsb by the looks of it as it's decided to boot with 266 or something but with the correct multiplier.

what could be causing this?

edit - will go 9x390 but not 9x400?
