Hey guys,

Bought a new processor for my old pc, was a simple upgrade from a Pentium 4 1.7Ghz to a Pentium 2.8Ghz.

First of all my motherboard started up fine and it said that hyper threading was active. The only problem is on CPUID it's showing the clock speed as 1.6Ghz?

I'm a bit puzzled and to be honest don't have the knowledge to know we're to troubleshoot.

Any ideas guys?

Thanks

Ok I will have a look in the bios for speed step. Was a little worried that it was going to be massively underclocked!

Thanks guys!

It's a QDI Platinix 2e. From what I've read on the net the Northwood CPU is supported and that this speedstep was implemented in Pentium 3 processors too?

What's the maximum FSB processor the motherboard will accept? It was only £2 so I'm not too fussed it wouldn't run :)

Well i've reset the bios to it's 'optimum' settings and when the old processor is places back in it allows you to alter the multiplier which wasn't available before? Isn't available on the 2.8 chip.

But when CPUID is loaded it says the BIOS is Phoenix and obviously the motherboard is QDI Platinix.

So i'm a little unsure which is actually the BIOS as QDI features are mentioned once in the BIOS.

I can confirm that the board supports hyper threading as that popped up when the 2.8Ghz chip was installed.

O I have a 2.4Ghz 533 on the way for £1 delivered :D

I'm still a little confused as to why the multiplier won't save it's setting though? The FSB can be changed including voltage etc

Well anything above 17x, I wasn't aware they were locked. I thought if the motherboard supported the ability to change it that it was changeable.

Ahh that makes sense then, make people pay a premium to get faster speeds.

Does anyone have an idea of what the FSB will be on the 2.4Ghz chip? I have my current 1.7Ghz chip running @ 17x120 to clock it to 2.04Ghz

Also last night i was offered an old PC from the girlfriends house which was only going to be thrown away.

It is Packard Bell with a AMD Athlon XP 2600+, is this comparable to either the P4 1.7 or 2.4 i've bought?

Hmm, i might have to amalgamate the 2 pc's then if the Athlon is better. I did notice that it was a bit faster to be honest

If i was to swap the AMD over with the motherboard is it a case of just swapping them over and installing the drivers for the graphics card once it had booted up?
