CPU Question For Someone Out Of The Loop

Hello, as someone who hasn't kept up with "the scene" for quite some time now, I am looking to upgrade my PC after a long time of it sitting on its i7 920, however just a bit confused about what to go for, Skylake seems to be all the rage now is this the best CPU to be buying right now?

the PC is just used for gaming really

Both your CPU and GPU are from circa 2009 but advances in GPU technology have been much faster, so it seems to me that if you're gaming a GPU upgrade would be better value for money.

You could always overclock your CPU some more too - don't think I've heard of anyone not being able to get 3.8 GHz stable and the majority seem to be able to get 4+ GHz. Upgrading to a Xeon X5650 is indeed cheap but not terribly useful for gaming unless you can clock it higher, which is a moot point in this case with so much existing overclocking headroom.

Sorry I should clarify, I have been updating the graphics card periodically its just the rest lagging behind, i have a 780 currently and will perhaps upgrade it when the new ones come out next year, but the 920 with 4gb of memory is where im putting some money now, it seems the i7 6700k looks like the best choice?

Though prices seem a lot higher now then a few months ago

Might be worth updating your signature. :)

Honestly an i7-6700K would be a bad idea right now, prices are ridiculous.

Yeah jeez just noticed how out of date that thing is, outside of the price though 6700k would be a good performer? i can always wait a couple of months and see if the price levels out again - assuming the high price is due to shortages?

If you must upgrade I'd go the i7 5820K route and bypass skylake, the price per performance is ridiculous but as DragonQ says a 5650 overclocked in your current setup would give you a cheap good boost, especially in dx12 games that like more cores and then you can hold out for the next iteration be it Amd Zen or Intel.

I have just bought a 6700k build after giving up wating for AMD to release something new. If you look around you can get the 6700k just as cheap as the 5820k if not cheaper I only spent £270 on the 6700k and £160 on the the gigabyte g1 gaming M/B which came free with 8gb of RAM.

if its for gaming then skylake is what you want... dont touch the 5820k mate, get the 6600k or the 6700k they will offer u the best results as far as gaming goes, the high price is because of shortages and because its newer technology... if u wait a few months it will deffo drop an extra 40 i would think.

heres a useful link about how the 6600k and 6700k are performing on the gaming front.

Wow.... Just wow, dont give advice if you don't have anywhere as to a clue what you are even talking about.

Annoyance aside, ignore that fool, currently a 5820k over Skylake as they are incredibly overpriced.
5820k offers better performance, 2 extra cores and 2 extra threads, will last longer, gives you access to the enthusiast line of products and provides the same performance if not better, than the 6600k/6700k.
Yes X99 motherboards are a bit more pricey, but with that you get more features, as i said before it is not the normal consumer board like Z107, it is the enthusiast line, but really, with the insane Skylake prices Haswell-E is MUCH better.

X99 makes massive sense right now. Faster more features and similarly priced.

Enthusiast at mainstream pricing.

Listen to the guys who know

I have a FX8350 so have nothing to gain or nothing invested here

Don't listen to the guy with 30 posts and was asking what's better 4 days ago

The X99 is by far the best platform available & it will also get a Broadwell drop in

Skylake is nice as I built a couple recently but X99 5820K is a no brainer

theaetrix.... why cant you put your point across in a civilized manner? there is absolutely no need for the name calling, why dont you go back to computer school and do some research... you are one of them absolute idiots that think the 2 extra cores mean something? in gaming terms they mean nothing, the architecture of the i7 6700k is far more advanced than the 5820k which makes sense as its new technology... the more i contintue to post on this sight the more i realise that its full of spammers like u trying to sell the 5820k to everyone... is it any coincidence though... considering that the skylake processors are out of stock and overpriced on this website tho?

theaetrix... the original poster is building a "gaming" pc not a video rendering pc... so you are really giving him bad advice, the i7 6700k simply smashed the 5820k in gaming benchmark if you bother to do your research mr.

Louis I mean this with the greatest of Respect

6700K does not smash the 5820k in Gaming- it can sometimes better it and sometimes they are neck and neck but simply for Multi Threaded tasks and future proofing your machine it is a no brainer to go X99

I also mean for the future proof in gaming

Respect peoples opinion as its exactly the same as yours is respected

I am not selling anything to anyone as I have an AMD system so chill out my friend and lets all just get along

and for 429 Bangers on this Website you get a Nice 5820k Bundle that will last a lifetime ( well a few years)
