Hi im wanting to buy a rig to last me a fair length of time for gaming, maybe with a few upgrades in the future.

Im going with 775 i think, but im worried it will be completely outdated very soon by i5 and i7 and stuff.

Is the 775 still a good CPU? I dont want to buy old technology, but I dont have that much money.

Well it really depends on your budget IMO, if you can afford an i7 now and want some "futureproofing" then thats probably the way to go. If your looking for something cheaper for the time being then 775 quads will no doubt be good for a few years, but I dont think youll be getting any upgrade potention from them. Intel wont be releasing new chips on the 775 platform.

Hope thats clear.

^^^ If you go for a similar setup to my own (see sig) then you'll have a great skt775 rig for any current game and video editing etc. There are currently very few games that tax the Q9550 CPU. However, as hawker1986 says there's not much further this can be upgraded CPU-wise. Another GPU possibly... and SSD's (mine should arrive today:D)

If you can afford it then yes, i7 is the ultimate setup at the mo, but you'll be paying a hefty price premium. Have you thought about the AMD Tri-cores? They're supposed to be very good for gaming. There's plenty about them in other threads in these forums, if I were you I'd do some more reading up on those as they could well be a better bet for your needs.

I always wondered about the term futureproofing. I am guilty of this as well ->
You buy something now "for the future" but when the future comes you have the urge to buy the new stuff anyway lol.

It depends how cheap you can find the 775 stuff now, if its pretty cheap then just go for a normal quad core instead of i7. Its not as if many games use quad cores properly so theres not really a reason to go i7 unless you are doing more renderingy (??) type work.

I suppose this means that 2 of the cores are lying idle if a game is running and it doesn't take full advantage of the 4 cores?

The latest game I have bought is TRD:GRID which I think is dual core orientated not quad core?

I have a Q9650 hence my comment!

775 with a decent dual core is fine for gaming. Also well overclockable. i7 processor's are one thing, but of course you also have to splash out on the motherboard and the ram etc. which all adds up.

Quad-core's still only make up around 11% of the market so developers will continue to cater to the majority.

775 is much better value for money now IMO. Also you can later upgrade to, say a Q9650, and whatever the best GPU is at that time. Plus Xfire/SLI for even more longevity.

Thanks for all your opinions, i was thinking of going for the e8400 and overclocking. I could upgrade to a quad later on. What do you think?

Thanks, Ross

Sounds like a good option as the 8400 clocks really well too, plus you've still got an upgrade path for the future. I say go for it and enjoy :D
