I've been searching for an answer but couldn't find one anywhere.

Lets say you buy a mobo that can support say 3000mhz ram but the cpu you buy only does 2400. Is it worth buying 3000 so in the future you dont need to upgrade or doesn't it work like that? or would the system simply not boot?

Cheers

Usually the CPU manufactures, Intel, AMD etc will only list official specs. They don't list any higher as that technically counts as an overclock (3000 MHz is an overclock technically speaking) so will not guarantee it (hence not list it) but most recent platforms can do 3000 MHz fine (though Ryzen will do 2933 MHz as it does not have a divider for 3000 MHz exactly.
