I managed to damage the CPU pins on a brand new Asus Rampage II Extreme motherboard and I haven't got the eyesight to be able to "bend" these very fragile slivers of gold plate back into the correct postition.
So question is: does anyone know of a place where they would carry out such a repair.
It is such a waste as this board costs £264.99 and hasn't even run yet. Ouuch :o

Just RMA it and say "It was like that when i bought it "?

Hmm good luck with that, you really expect the retailer to take the hit because he damaged the product.

@ Loz how badley damaged is the pin? sometimes they just come out of thier plastic channels and can be stroked back into place if you are lucky.

If its not too badly bent get an old plastic bank card and cut it to fit in the socket, then gently bend the pins back where it belongs. Shouldn't be that difficult so long as you haven't totally flattened them.

Can you take a pic of the damage?

Dont unbend yerself as it not warranty by Intel as if you do then you may buy new one - if the pin is bend then only contact Intel and send to them and they will do for you as I read some small parts in Intel news few years ago - the pins sitting in motherboard as CPU is pinless so users cannot to unbend or fix it as Intel dont accept to repair to replace,etc.. so beware of fix the pins as it very fraglie which is much easier to break.

I had this on my gigabyte and they couldnt do it on 1366 socket in the uk so they replaced the board , cost me a tenner but tbh i was dead pleased as i bent it myself in the first place

I read in another forum topic by the Asus rep that Asus will repair socket damage but you will be charged for it.

Happend to me with a Biostar I55, the socket pins are not very durable not like AMD sockets - too much pressure & thats it bent or snapped pins.

I wont buy another Intel rig untill they design a better durable socket.

I argued my case even though my RMA was rejected, ended up paying 1/2 price for a Gigabyte I55 which I ended up selling anyway.

You could argue your case via the Sales of Goods Act etc that it's up to the retailor/manufacturer to prove that you did the damage within the 1st 6 months of purchase.

I do need to agree with Nelly, these new intel sockets are such a lame thing, while building my pc i had the same problem, bended few pins :/ but my mobo was 1 months old and i had installation insurance, and my retailer changed it without problems. I was lucky that time that by accident i bout that installation insurance!
First thing that i would do i would contact retailer asking what can be done, and then would talk to Asus directly. Good luck!

Sorry for slow response. I've been redecorating my study and PC has been down.
OCUk would not replace or give out RMA as apparently ASUS will not accept bent CPU pins, full stop.

I did bend them myself when taking out the protective cover which somehow bent a couple of pins. My last experience with this had been in a previous CPU where all the pins were oriented one way, and with that you could gently brush the pins back into place. With the 775 the orientation is two ways, so that brushing just bends more pins up.
I've spent a lot of time with a pin and magnifying glass trying to straighten them but a couple have lost the tips to them Duhhhhh.

At work we integrate thousands of 775 systems a year and have little or no socket damage.
I'm sure you do Nightmare but you guys are probably aware of the frailty of these things in the first place.

I have bought another one and I'm using that.
So now I've got a lovely box and accesories with a pretty Mobo that's useless. Ah well Live and learn.

Thanks Nelly I might try on the Asus forum and see if they can do anything.

Thanks everyone for the help.

Is'nt it Creative Computing that does the repairs on Asus boards?

****Edit**** Yes it is. £16 for a repair which is a bargain. Here's the link.

Is that not only for in warranty repairs though?

EDIT
Q.What happens if my item has been physically damaged ?

A. It will be rejected and returned to you if your product has been damaged.

Try a local PC repair place.

I had a similar thing happen to my old AMD 64 3200+.

To cut a long story short, the CPU had stuck fast on the heatsink when I removed it; with the force it took to come off, the CPU dropped on my bedroom floor, which bent a few pins.

I used a combination of my finger nails (they were long at the time) a credit card (to check everything was straight) and then wriggled it into the socket gently. This eventually got everything straightened up and nice.

Unfortunately, through transit and no fault of my own, (I stupidly let someone else take care of my PC case) and some time later; the heatsink and fan had come off again, but the CPU had two many bent bins on it to really recover.

Regards,

David

Like the above quote, I would give them a ring see what they say: Phone: 0141 649 7577 if it is £16 it's well worth it.
