CPU spikes every 30 seconds.

Is the whole PC locking momentarily or is it just the mouse?

If the former could point to an IRQ problem. I've seen it caused by a TV card before for example... and just moving it to another PCI slot solved it.

Just the mouse. Thought I'd fixed it when I changed the Speed and Acceleration setting in SetPoint to OS implementation rather than SetPoint implementation.

New PC btw. No hardware added since I installed Vista x64 Home Premium so I doubt its an IRQ problem. Any thoughts?

Any antivirus programs with on access scanning turned on that could be causing it? you dont have java installed and using up a shed load of memory do you?

also try connecting your mouse to a different port (so its running off a different bus or whatever)

Using NOD32. Will check the on-access scanning. Would it be safe to turn it off if that does turn out to be the problem.

Have got Java installed but not running. I don't see the point of Java running in the background when I use Java very infrequently. :)

Was thinking that could help. Will try that later. :)

Well...im probably not the best person to answer that, I have never and will never use AV on my home PC :D interferes with too much in my opinion, I keep spy ware checkers and immunizations all up to date and only ever go on the same set 5 websites so don't really see the need.... as well as the fact that if I get a virus 99% of the time ill just reinstall windows anyway instead of faffing about getting rid of it. (i could go on for ages explaining my reasons etc but im just going to run away now before people have a go at me :p)

Can understand people using it when they have work and other critical things on their PCs though :)
