CPU Temp check please

Hiya guys

Built my system, but im informed my CPU at idle might be running to hot?

its at 61-62 deg

The CPU is the Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)

MoBo is an ASUS P5Q Pro Intel

CPU cooler is an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler

Artic Silver 5 compound had to be re-applied to this as I have a RAM Cooler that really obstructed the Fan on the Freezer 7, so I rotated the cooler head 90deg clockwise, I have an Antec 1200 with huge fan at the top, so it seemed a good choice!

The Artic Silver 5 Website said how to apply the stuff on the Quad CPU and I am sure i've done it correctly, could I have applied too much, making the gap to big, would this cause to high a temp?

The Bios Settings for the CPU Fan are default, and the Antec 1200 case has so many fans im sure it cant be lack of airflow!

Any advice or help appreciated please guys!

It is if its idle - may be OK if that's full load though. Mine runs upper 40's full load & it sits in a HTPC case.

Those are pretty high for idle, suggest you check the mounting of the freezer and make sure the pins are fully through, also check the bios qfan setting is enabled and select one of the profiles, silent, standard, turbo etc. If still no joy try redoing the thermal paste.

For idle that's way too hot as I mentioned in another 1 of your threads.

Have you checked that the push pins have been pushed in all the way and clicked and locked?

Also get a copy of CoreTemp and see what that reports and see if the temps are pretty much the same across all 4 cores.

Thanks for the replies guys

The Bios is untouched with the fan settings, the Freezer 7 fan is running flat out at the moment but I will select the NORMAL profile see what happens

I will test the system tomorrow, the 61-62 reading was at startup in the Bios, so Windows 64bit ultimate hadnt even loaded, it was just idle

what should the temp be?

Should it make a difference is the coolers turned 90deg clockwise?

The pins are im sure pushed home fully, will too much Artic Silver 5 paste cause this?

I'll get a copy of CoreTemp and see what it reports, if one of the cores is higher is this insuffiecent paste or mebbe a dodgy CPU?

If one core is reading higher this may mean one core is doing more work or the top of the head spreader on the CPU or the AC7 base is not completly flat.

Orientation of the AC7 should not matter belongs your getting air accross the fan and it's not fighting against any other fans.

Temps should be in the 30's ono on that cooler and stock speed, the cooler venting upwards providing you have a top exhaust fan should be fine also. And yes to much thermal paste isnt good, just a fine line then let the pressure of the heatsink spread it out. And dont worry to much if one or more cores are slightly different as this is common on quads.

Ok guys, I will have a look tomorrow (Been building it at work or I would be looking now lol)

The Freezer 7 fan MIGHT be fightin the airflow..... the Antec 1200 draws in from the front, vents out the top and the back

The PSU is drawing air in and down? the fans on the top (Enermax Revolution 85+ 1050W) of the PSU, so I would have a fan drawing air down, and the CPU fan is trying to draw the air up

Mhhh confusin lol

I'll post here tomorrow after I've tried the CoreTemp Prog out, if the temps are all pretty even, I will replace the head on the CPU after redoing the Artic Siver 5 and see where we are then

Chris

you may want to reapply a thin layer of thermal if you put too much.

Shouldn't really have high temps like that at idle, should think between 30 to low 40s idle at stock speed. Also you need to give some time for thermal paste to settle in, think AS recommend like 200 hours (probably less in reality).

You did clean off the pre-applied paste off the Freezer Pro before installing it with AS didn't you?

Also checking temps in the BIOS is fine but on some mobos this has the same effect as running the CPU at almost full load. You really need to get a copy of CoreTemp and check it in Windows with the CPU at idle then running something like Prime95 to get full load temps.

Hiya guys,

Ok firstly YES I did clean off the pre-applied paste before putting on the artic Pro... but I noticed the face of the artic Freezer had some small pits in it, like craters, it would never have shown up unless I had cleaned it!

Is this ok? Do they usually have very small holes in them, or should I return it for a new one? (are there better units or is this one a decent cooler?)

I am about to use the coretemp proggy, nearly lunchtime lol, I will report back when I've given it a go... I'll power it up, enter the bios, give it 5 mins warmup time, then check the temp in the bios, boot windows, and run the coretemp to see where we are at

Chris

Extended Lunchtime lol

ok, powered up the PC, left it on for 5 mins in the BIOS mode, rebooted, entered bios, and the temp said 55

I noticed whilst powering up the machine first time, I watched the Artic Freezer fan, it spun, but it sort of sped up, then slowed down.... didnt know if this was right or not? at one point it looked almost stationary

I selected the CPU fan in the bios, and its on TURBO now, so hopefully this will keep the CPU cooler

Now, after booting windows, i ran the Coretemp program, with interesting results!!

Temps.jpg

The HIGHEST the 1st core got to was 24 and the others +/- 2 deg nothing major...... so..... is the BIOS Setting in deg F instead of deg C??

another thing worth noting as seen below.... ASUS PROBE program...

Temps2.jpg

CPU 10 deg c??????

WTF lol

anyway, hopefully someone will tell me that the temps are ok and that I dont need to worry?

ok whats the best thing to use to load it??

I've heard of PRIME95 but never used it, whats it do..... i'll have a look for a download of it :)

Hiya guys

OK PC Is at home now, I will be changing systems in about an hour or so

I've DL Prime 64bit version, and I will install and run that overnight

Do I need to run the TORTURE Test Ive been hearing about?

if so, anyone give me some info on this and what I should be doing lol

Cheers
