Spreading out the thermal paste beforehand is actually one of the worst methods to do.

not on topic .... but thanks for that vid makes me feel happy that i done the pea method rather than spreading like many people recommend

It's the heatsink manufacturers that seem to recommend spreading all over the surface...

If you put a big enough blob it will naturally spread all over the surface anyway (without any trapped air), TIM hanging over the sides is not a problem as long as it's not conductive and touching electrical components.

Thanks guys. I completed the installation of the new CPU cooler yesterday and it has made a massive improvement. Idle temp is around 29c and load temps are around 50c. A massive improvement! I'm still tinkering with my BIOS to work out which mode is best to leave the CPU cooler in. At the moment I have it set to target temp of 50c which explains my highest temp reading but ideally I would like to change this so there is less noise at higher temps...
