CPU temp stuck at 41c

In speedfan and other temp monitoring software my E8600 always shows 41c for both cores. Although in bios it shows a varying temperature. What is the cause of this?

The BIOS may be looking at the socket or Heatspreader temp, were Speedfan and the other software would be looking at actual core temps.

My E8600 had stuck sensors, seemed to work when I overclocked.

Stuck which way? If it never moves at all, rma it. If it moves upwards from 41 under load, then it doesn't matter. Stuck sensors are a common fault, generally ignored.

The DTS built into the chip sometimes don't work or partially work. AFAIK the BIOS doesn't use the DTS for temps but instead socket temps (a little probe sitting beneath the CPU in the socket).

I'g guess your chip has DTS that won't go any lower than 41°C but if you were to overclock it, pump the vCore and run some insane diagnostics like IBT/LinX the temps would probably start rising! . . . . I guess your system is running quite cool so its not getting hot enough! :D

Thanks for the replies.

The temp never moves from 41c and im curretly running it at 3.8ghz (1.3v) with a thermaltake ultra 120 cooler and under stress test or gaming it never moves from 41c. So I guess its a stuck sensor then.

every wolfdale i have had has stuck sensors for some reason approx arond 40 - 50c i just use Prime95 to stress and they start working above that temp

Same here. My Pentium dual core E5200 and E6300 as well as my E8500 all have stuck sensors. E5200 is stuck at 46 degrees, E6300 stuck at 44 degrees and the E8500 is stuck at 42 degrees. Get them loaded and heated up and they will move.
