CPU temp worries

I have a G3258 CPU and OC'd it 4.2ghz 1.175V and was fine, Idle was at 46 most of the time and would go up to 60's when using Dolphin Emulator and low 70's with Ultra Street Fighter 4.

So I put it back to stock speed (3.2ghz) with default presets and idle is around 43 and it was doing mid 50's when I was doing a simple application form in Firefox.

I'm guessing something is wrong because stock and OC are pretty much the same. Im using the stock cooler and was thinking of getting the CM Evo 212 but I can only use an 80mm cooler . This is the case http://www.cooltek.de/en/cubes/coolcube/2/coolcube

Some advice please

Dont worry about it,the intel stock cooler is absolute garbage, and you still have temps that are safe for 24/7 usage, not to mention its summer so temperatures are gonna be higher due to that.

Regarding the difference in temps between stock and OCed,on haswell cpus temperatures increace relative to Vcore rather than multiplier for the most part. I dont know what your voltage at stock speeds is,but 1.175v isnt that high a voltage.Your stock voltage probily isnt much lower, thus why the temps arnt too different between stoc speeds and 4.2ghz

I'd double check you are overclocking correctly I used this guide to overclock my G3258.http://www.overclock.net/t/1411077/haswell-overclocking-guide-with-statistics
I just ended up with 1.275 vcore adaptive voltage not manual 45x cpu ratio, 33x uncore auto uncore voltage, 2.00 VCCIN turbo off , all power saving features on.

Are you overclocking the uncore if so what ratio and which voltage better off leaving it at 33x and auto voltage this will enable you to get the vcore down further maybe.there's little difference it would seem overclocking the uncore maybe gain 1-3 fps.

And if 1.175 voltage is stable for 4.2ghz then use adaptive voltage and balanced power scheme in windows so the voltage goes down when idle.

Also worth cleaning the stock heatsink and using your own paste if you have any.If not then defo buy a semi decent cooler you will get 4.5 ghz easy in the 1.3 voltage area.

I told you in your other thread that you will most likely have heat problems with that case. Which way around did you put your psu in the end? If the psu fan is facing the cpu cooler it's only going to make things worse.

@MrMD stock/default volt is 1.088V so thats quite a bit of difference right?

@C64 I changed ram speed down to 1600 from 1833, but I'll give that guide a go once I get a new cooler maybe. And I did apply Arctic thermal paste

@SouthEastBlue Im guessing it must be a cooler problem but everything clicked into place

@pastymuncher Its facing the mesh. Would adding 40mm fans help in any way?

Pretty much the only thing 40mm fans do is scream away while shifting next to no air. It looks like you can get a cooler up to 80mm tall in there so buying a better cooler is worth a try. Apart from that I can't see that you can do a lot else with that case. One vented side panel is blocked by the motherboard and the other is mostly covered by the psu. No vents in the front or roof and the bottom ones are blocked by the hdd's/ssd's. It's basically a hot box with very little airflow.

Will this fit/ http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=2657 the fan is inside the heatsink

You are using the Asus Maximus VII Impact aren't you? The cooler is 60mm tall so less than the 80mm max your case will take so that's ok. It's 110mm across though so I am not sure it will clear your ram or that Impact Power card thing on the top of your board. For a rough idea of if it will fit get a tape measure and find the centre of your cpu socket and then measure 55mm out in all directions to check for clearance. I don't wat to tell you to buy something only to find it doesn't fit. The fan on that cooler is noisey at full speed too.
