CPU Temperature fluctuations

I have recently bought an Opteron 146 and installed it with stock cooler in a DFI Infinity motherboard.

I find that when I use Smartguardian to check the CPU temperature, it seems to fluctuate all over the place between about 8 and 22 degrees C (when idle)

Why am I not getting a steady temperature?

I doubt the that is the cpu temp, 8c is very low. It should be somewhere around 30c-50c.

Check the cpu temp in the bios.

When I boot up and check the BIOS the CPU temp in there is about 28.

Does smartguardian not get its temp from the same sensor or directly from the BIOS? And is there a solution?

Cheers

Phil.

The program is most likely producing a bogus reading from either a non-existent thermal diode, or the diode itself is faulty, or not attached properly.

Not neccessarily - for example, an older version of EVEREST (another app for monitoring temps) instead showed my CPU as some bogus value like 69C!!! The new version, my BIOS, and the Gigabyte V-Tune tool I had all said normal values ranging between 20-40C.

It's possible SmartGuardian isn't picking up the right thermal diode...

i have the exact same problem with my DFI. I updated the bios but to no avail, head over to DFI street forums and download their mbm5 config for your motherboard, you are probably better off getting a thermal probe though to get an exact measurement :)
