Hi all,

I'm hoping you could help with a problem, please. Here's a quick hardware list:

Gigabyte GA-Z68AP-D3 mobo
i5 2500k @ 3.4 GHz
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 CPU cooler
8GB RAM
Radeon R9 Fury X graphics card

This setup has run without issue for almost a year now (Win 10-64).

A recent problem with laggy games (probably due to a dodgy AMD graphics driver) led me to poke around a bit. It seems all four of my CPU cores idle at around 55 degrees and a few minutes gaming has them jumping to 97 degrees.

The CPU cooler fan rotates nicely and the cooler seems securely attached to the processor.

Are temps like this normal?

I would say 97 degrees is way to hot, maybe you need to apply some fresh thermal paste.

This.

I recently applied fresh thermal paste to my i7 (4770k) and 100% load temps dropped from low 90's to low 50's.

To be fair, it was pretty obvious when I took the old block off that the first thermal paste hadn't had a good contact at all. But still, a good 40 degrees lower now, at 100% load.

Same thing happened on my gf's PC, turned out the heatsink was cracked so wasn't working properly. Double check that it's in tact and mounted securely. Otherwise remove it and redo the thermal paste?

have you checked for dust build up?

remove fan from cooler, clear dust out and clear all the dust from in between the hs as if the airflow is not good it can cause issues.

what cooler do you have?

Yeh a strip down and clean and reattach of the cpu cooler, that should show up any damage/dust building up, bad thermal paste, ensure screws are engaging with the back plate etc.
