cpu temps 85 c on new build

hi guys my cpu temps are 85 c on my new build with a h50 during a stability test using occt, is this normal, I doubt it like maybe should I try putting some thermal paste on it as ive used the stock paste on the h50?
 
Whats your system spec, and is it at stock or overclocked? Also make sure that the H50 pump power connector is receiving full power, ie connect it to the psu or a fan header on the motherboard that doesnt have speed control enabled.

hi its a i7 950 at stock, i just used the paste that was on the h50 from the box, its idling at 32-37 all cores but when i run a test on occt they went up to 77 88 69 and 90 after 1 minute, the pump is plugged into CHA_fan2 on the asus mobo
 
Seems lilke either a mounting problem or the pump is'nt running full speed.

Plug the pump into a pwr_header, check your mother board manual, the layout diagram that shows which headers are which, as the pwr header will give 100%, where as fan headers may not.

Try that then retest, if its still the same, you may have to remount the waterblock.
 
It is going up to 87 at full load for 3 minutes from moving it to PWR-FAN slot, what do i need to do to remount it? do i have to clean off the old paste and put new on? I have MX-3 here but i dont have any alchohol to remove the old stuff, can i just put some over it?
 
Youll need to clean the old paste off, isopropyl alcohol is good for this, if you dont have any, certain brands of cd cleaning fluid contain this and will do just as well, then apply a fresh application of MX3 to the cpu surface, rice grain sized blob, or a fine line across the cores.

Those instructions are for the line method with AS5 paste, but the same principles apply to MX3 or any other brand.

hey thanks for your advide mate, I took the waterblock off and it must not of been screwed down enough as most of the paste hadnt even touched the cpu, i just scraped off what was on there with a cut up credit card and applied a thin layer of mx3 on the waterblock and cpu and re sat the water block, had test running for 5 mins now and temps are down to 65 degrees at 100% load is this temp ok? what temps am i looking for? as i do plan to over clock
 
Theyre still a bit high for a stock rig, id expect high 40's to mid 50's for a stock rig on a stress test, (just generalizing as no two people will have the same ambient temps, case cooling etc). Ideally you want to get the cpu surface as cean as possible, then just apply the thermal paste to the cpu alone, the pressure of the heatsink will help to spread it out. Also make sure that your cooler fan/s are running full speed when stress testing.
