CPU Temps on i5 2500k

idle depends, but i think mine is in the 30s, and under load (prime testing) 70s, 80s tops. whilst in normal use (gaming) 60s ideally.

im sure someone will say im wrong and you should EVER go over 72c, but they are wrong :p
 
i think the exact max is 98c or something, but you dont want to be going over 80 in prime, so i would say you are probably at about the limit. if you can lower the vcore a bit then temps should come down below 80c
 
Remount the cooler, those temperatures are awful for 4.4Ghz on an i5. I'm clocked to 4.7Ghz and my load temperatures don't go above mid 70s, and my cooler is a Corsair A50 which is just as budget as yours. Also if you want to drop the temperatures further and don't mind getting your hands dirty, I can walk you through dropping the VCore a bit, there'll be plenty of room to lower it from what OcUK have set it to, and it will keep your temperatures at a much more reasonable level.
 
Even if it does help I'd still have a play with the voltages, but I just like to tinker. :p All you have to do is pop into the BIOS, find the area where you can adjust the voltages (Can't help there, I have a Gigabyte board with a different BIOS), and lower it to say 1.300V. Then boot into windows and leave it running a bit of software called Prime95 overnight to test if it is stable. If when you wake up it's still running, you can either leave it as it is or drop the voltage further and re-test it. If you have a pretty blue screen in the morning, you'll have to nudge the voltage up a bit. But even a small voltage reduction can have an impact on temperatures.

As an example, I too had an i5 bundle at 4.4Ghz from OcUK. Since then I've played around with the overclock, and I now have it running at 4.7Ghz at a lower temperature and voltage than it was initially running 4.4 on. Your mileage may vary here though as some chips are better than others.

i lowered my VCore to 1.250v and havent noticed any temp drops :( i thought i had, but they still get as hot in prime, just takes longer to get there. maybe my cooler is really bad at getting rid of the heat so it just stays in th heatsink and warms up the chip, so you might get better luck.

That's interesting, I definitely noticed mine lower. Are you sure the ambient temperatures didn't just go up? it's been getting hotter day by day down where I live. It's foiling my attempts to get to 4.8 :(.

i suppose that is a possability. although everytime it stops at 82/83c so i would imagine thats the best my cooler can do. it normally took 2-3mins to get that hot, now its nearer the 7-10mins so there is deffinatly improvements, just i fear my cooler is being pushed past its limits.
i know on my last 2 builds (i7 920 D0 and X2 unlocked to X3) overclocked the vcore drop made temps go down. so i think sandybridg is gunna require more, so silver arrow is my next purchase.
 
I didn't think that coolermaster hiper you get with it was that good.

I notice OCUK dont sell it anymore. Could be cause of high temps, my 2500k doesn't go over 70c.
 
I'm using the Hyper 212+ and get about 35-44 degrees on the 2500k at 4.4ghz. Using intelburntest at 100% this goes up to 75-80 depending on the room temperature. My voltage is 1.3v currently, but even at stock volts I was getting similar temperatures.

I remounted the cooler as well hoping for a decrease in temps but they seem to be exactly the same, so maybe it's just not very good? :D
 
well to be honest mate, will it be under 100% load 24/7? because the intel burn test/prime 95 are to check stability/temps with everything turned up to max, during normal use i guess it wont be maxed out all time, you only really start affecting cpu lifespan if your temps are getting so high that the cpu is throttling itself, otherwise it shouldnt really impact life span, have you tried turning up cpu/case fans a bit? or are they maxed out now?
 
That's still a bit high even for full load.

Mine idles around 31C and max under load is like 55C (prime 95 and intel burn test is a bit more at 57C).

I would say around 80C tops under stress testing for max life but that's just my view.
