I am looking for some guidance on what temp a dual core2 1866 ghz should run at.

it idles at around 58-60 which i think is high.

when running orthos for 3.5 minutes it went up to 70 degrees and i got a heat alarm from the mobo.

the processor is using the stock cooler.

Are you positive the cooler is seated right?

Seems very hot.

Bet the heatsink isn't fitted correctly. Try taking it off and refitting it a second time.

60c idle! seriously something wrong there, do what others have said.

after the 3rd time of trying temps are finally down to 45-50 degrees. is this the best i can expect from a stock cooler? can anyone recommend a decent cooler? the fan revolves at around 2800-3000 revs

Still seems a little high to me even with a stock cooler. Is that 45-50 degrees on idle or load?

although i don't think the thermal paste is the best. and its tricky to get arctic silver out here ( hungary)

Even with the stock TIM pad, it shouldn't be that high imo. Not at idle anyhow.

ok originally after 4 minutes it hit 70 and i cancelled it.

reseated h/s and idle at 45-50

under stress maxed out at 64 and settled at around 59-60 after 13 minutes or so, i was using orthos to stress cpu
