CPU underclocked

Hello,

Messing about with my lads pc again. I bought a E6600 a while back on the MM to replace the E1500 that was in the pc. Noticed straight away that it was underclocked to 1600mhz from 2400mhz on a 6x266fsb in the BIOS.

When i put it on 9x (back to 2400mhz) it would just bluescreen after a few minutes or straight away.

Could this be down to power issues?

Rig:
E6600
2GB 10800 DDR3 Ram
ASRock G41M - VS3 R20 Mobo
BFG 8800GTX
OcUK 450W PSU

Been having none stop issues with the PC for the last few month, missing .dll files, odd bluescreens, firefox and windows constantly restarting.

Swapping around from 'Windows 7 Home' down to 'Vista Home Basic' after constant balls up in Windows 7 with the above issues. Tried many clean installs with Windows 7 but it never fixed anything.

So i have put the computers original Vista Home basic back on last night and everything seems to be going ok at the moment, except i still cant put the E6600 on stock settings without it blue screening and Firefox still likes to throw crash error reports and restart its self.

Done a Intel burn test which went ok with a max CPU temp of 48 degrees and now doing a FurMark test that is 30minutes in and the GPU has stuck at 80 degrees. So the system seems pretty stable with the CPU at 1600Mhz.

Also the board does not have GoStepping so that can be ruled out straight away.

Thanks

Hello, i bought a CPU from the MM, not whole computer. The BIOS automatically underclocked the E6600.

Any other settings to the CPU makes the system unstable. Yeah i tried resetting the CMOS.

I think it is something to do with the Mobo or the PSU. Not much settings to play with on the Mobo, i initially thought the CPU wasn't getting enough juice, but i cannot find a option in the BIOS to change the voltage to the CPU.

don't intel cpu's run at 1600 when idle ?

have you checked the frequency with CPUID when under load ith something like IBT or prime ?

Yeah, that is why i did the tests and it stayed at 1600mhz.

The PSU is a Huntkey 450w. The computer as it is is still running a lot quicker than it would be with the E1500 so it isn't a massive problem.

Just bugging me why i can't get it to run at stock settings.

Say, he only watches Youtube Minecraft video's and plays Minecraft and Scribblenauts and flash games on it.So it is not a massive biggy if i can't sort it.

I would try a new PSU to be honest, even if it's not the PSU causing the problem, it's still a time ticking bomb (very cheap components, no protection circuits, etc). It's always wise to get a well branded PSU just to ensure that the PSU won't take out the rest of the system if it does go wrong.

Can you take the GPU out and try the onboard GPU, then test the CPU at full speed? Just to see if it can help lighten the load on the PSU.

To be fair the PSU must be about 6-7 years old. Was still sealed till about 6 months ago when i put it in my lads PC for the 8800GTX i bought for it (had some little 250w PSU before that).

I will take out the GPU tonight and see if the CPU will run at stock settings.

Thanks for your help guys, will reply tonight and let you know if it changed anything.

Right, just managed to have a quick look.

It just BSOD with a MEMORY MANAGEMENT ERROR 0x0000001A. Ran Intel burn and it failed on the 2nd round saying the CPU is unstable then i ran the Vista memory diagnostic test which also failed saying there is a issue with the memory.

Decided to pull the GPU and the CPU went back to 2400mhz.

Still having the issues with IntelBurn and the Vista memory test though. Computer is running fine though?

To add, the 2GB memory only cost me £10 from the big Indian food named shop. Think it is a brand called PNY 10600 DDR3.

Possible for the ram not to like Vista? Can't say i had any problems with memory with Windows7.

Thanks

Edit: 'PNY - PC3-10660 DDR3-1333 PC Memory - 2GB DIMM RAM' it says.

How long does this Memtest86 run for? Been on for ages now.... Up to yet it has something like 200k+ errors

What would £400 get? Fed up with it now.

Like i said, he only watches Youtube videos, plays minecraft/scribblenauts and flash games.

Happy to keep the 8800GTX, just need new everything else.

Thanks

Well it is still running. Most things are stuck at 65k+ errors(most it goes to) and that was just after the 1st run. It is now on its 3rd run probably around 600k+ errors.

The board was bought from OcUK a few months ago.

Like i said, i am fed up with it now. Every week i find i am messing about with it to get it working. Think the biggest problem is probably me, i am useless with PC's.

Sorry to be a pest but does all this work together?:

Will use the Graphics card and CD drive from the old computer.

It his birthday next month and we have already got him a WiiU but we know he would much prefer a new working computer, so we have decided that we can save the WiiU till Christmas. Makes sense to us anyway. So if any of you can help us out, that would be great.

£400 is the limit, less is better though.

Thank you.

EDIT: Just noticed you can build your own PC through OcUK website so i will use that to build something then buy them without going through the build. Saves about £60 on a £400 build not to go though the OcUK build thing.

Will the 8800GTX work with with todays components?

Thanks

Hello,

Thank you for the reply i was just half way through making a new thread.

What i was going to say:
Hello guy's,

Following on from this THREAD, we have just decided to get a new PC for are little lad. The old PC has just been causing us grief for too long now

I have built up a little setup hoping to still use the 8800GTX from the old system. Unless anyone can tell me why this is a bad idea?

Setup i have put together with a bit of help from the OcUK site rig builder:

Does this look ok? Will it all work together? Will the 8800GTX work with all these? Will it last a few years? (We already have the O/S, GPU, CD drive)

PC is mainly used for Videos, Minecraft with his school friends and flash games. With him getting older though he might get into more demanding games.

Feel free to change things around if it work out better/cheaper.

Thank you.

I selected the i5 as i am guessing it will be more future proof? Thought the 8800GTX will last a bit till it needs to be upgraded.

What do you think?

and to reply to the WiiU comment. That is EXACTLY what will happen with Lewis. He will play is Lego game and Mario game till he is bored and then never touch it again and go straight back to his PC/Minecraft.

Thanks for your help :)

So the i3 will be fine if he starts playing games like GRID2 and Need For Speeds? Saves £60 so I will not argue with that.

I honestly have no clue at all what all the numbers and chipset names mean. We just want to get him something that will work with no hassle at all involved other than putting it together and installing the O/S which is 32bit.

We have both agreed that the green LED case is a must for him as he will love that.

4GB memory will have to be enough at the moment to as the W7 we have is 32bit.

Thanks

The i3 can do for now then. Thanks for the links to W7, very handy information.

Noticed the case is out of stock at the moment, so hopefully they will have them in stock very soon.

I am happy with the spec you have posted up.

Thanks for your time, you have been some great help!
