Good morning all,

I am looking at upgrading my CPU. I currently have the Intel I5-4660 on a Gigabyte H81M-S2V Motherboard with 12GB DDR3 Ram and MSI GTX Geforce 970

Hi

If your just planning to upgrade the cpu on your motherboard a 4770k would be a good option. Or are you after a newer cpu , motherboard and memory ?

Just looking to be able to play moden games like Red Dead Redemption
Your pc meets the minimum requirements for red dead redemption 2 , modern games can be demanding.

A 6 core cpu , motherboard and memory will cost you about £300 if you want to bring your system up to date.

The gtx 970 may struggle in some titles at 1080p but upgrades cost money.

As said above the 970 is starting to struggle in newer games and with the gpu shortage there aren't any to recommend at a sensible price unless you are lucky enough to get a gpu from the nvidia shop. https://youtu.be/bhLlHU_z55U?t=293
The 11400f official launches in a couple of days, I would recommend looking out for a review. An intel 11400f, b560 motherboard, 16 or 32GB ddr4 would be a good upgrade for gaming if the reviews come out ok. With an upgrade of the gpu when the market settles

As mentioned, the 4770k is considered the sweet spot for your socket. However, they are still around £100 - £120 second hand, and I'd say that it's not worth it.

Hold onto your cash for the moment, wait for the 11 series to be released and reviewed properly and then take a look at what you can afford.

Just get the none-K version the 4770, the 4 threads and the increase in speed will be good enough, but you shouldn't be spending more than £50.

Thank you for the advice. Im new to upgrading. The only thing i have to was put the 970 gfx in and new EVGA BRONZE 600B PSU. Where does everyone buy from?

Sorry if any of my question seem daft. I am very much new to all this so i am trying to learn as i go. Recently got into PC gaming rather than console but there is much to learn. I currently have a Gigbyte H81M-SV2 Motherboard.

It's a good thing to get into :)

If you can find a 4770 for around £50, then yeah, that's a good upgrade. You'll see the difference and it's a fairly easy upgrade. Just watch a few tutorials on YouTube first and you'll be fine.

You'll need to take off the CPU cooler to get to your processor underneath. Between your processor and cooler is some thermal compound. You'll need to clean the old stuff off your i5 and off then bottom of your CPU cooler (assuming you'll be re-using it) and then apply some fresh thermal compound.

Have a look here...

That kit has all you need to remove the old stuff and add new. I've had a bottle of TIM clean that's lasted me something like 15 years so far! Still going strong. Just use a few drops on some kitchen paper to carefully clean them both.

Handy tip, buy a bit over kill for doing a single CPU swap. You can grab 100x Alcohol Wipes for ~£1.50, which are individually sealed and can be used for many other things, being lint free also helps. As for the thermal paste, well there is better than what you get in that kit for about £4, of you can get the same paste for £2.45. :)

You can look up on youtube how best to apply thermal paste or a thermal pad, I always look for non conductive paste so as not to risk a short circuit
