Hi all, I have an Asus z170 Pro gaming Intel z170 (socket 1151) DDR4 Motherboard with an
Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151

I've not upgraded a CPU before, and would like to know my upgrade options please, can I replace it with any CPU with an LGA1151 socket?

Thanks

Hello
Your board has limited CPU upgrades. You could replace your current 6700K (6th Generation) with its successor the 7700K (7th Generation), but it wouldn't be worth it given the price performance cost these days.
I'd keep it as it is or sell 2nd hand & buy more up to date hardware. Ryzen 3rd Generation has matured very well & 4th Generation is coming soon. Intel 10th Generation is current & certain motherboards should support 11th Generation when its released sometime next year, but intel only supports its sockets for 2 generations at best. AMD supports its motherboards for a little while longer.

Right now you have pretty much hit the limit in terms of pure cores and threads. I can only recommend that you squeeze every performance out of that 6700k by overclocking it.

It depends what you want your computer to do. If it's just gaming, your CPU is still very viable and you should maybe just look at a graphics upgrade.

However, if you're crunching numbers in a different way and have a decent budget, you could go to a newer i7 or Ryzen system.

Hey guys, thanks for all your replies, I was hoping to just put a new CPU in there are not have to buy a new machine this year.
It's mainly used for VR flight sim and gaming. Its got a gtx980ti in there at the moment and it can run most things on max settings but the new microsoft simulator is quite demanding and its struggling at times at ultra settings. I'm waiting for the new rtx3000 series to be released, and thought I'd add some memory and zoop up the CPU a bit as well, but not looking like it's going to be worth it!
