Hi

I have a Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800 on the way to replace my old 3200

My motherboard is an Asus AN8 E socket 939 with bios 1005

I read bits and pieces on here and am pretty sure i know what to do

1 Reset bios to default settings (3200 is o/clocked)

2 Download latest bios (can this be installed while in windows or do i have to create a boot floppy disc)

3 Take out old chip and clear the cmos by removing the battery and replace new chip

4 Bobs yer uncle, overclock as required

Is there anything ive missed

Cheers

Just to be safe, don't flash the bios in Windows, it works alright but there are plenty of people who've experienced the pain of flashing bios through Windows.
Looks pretty much spot on though, only thing that might need to be done is to install the driver to recognise the chip as multiprocessor. Using an existing Windows install might keep it as a single CPU core until this is done. (Just look at task manager to see if there's 2 cpu graphs)

All sounds good to me.

I have an Asus board and I find it easier and more reliable to download the latest bios from the Asus website, then select the 'update from a file' option in the Asus update software.

It never seems to work when trying to update from the internet and a boot disc is more hassle.

the thing with flashing within the windows enviroment is that any system error can mess you up. A bootable CD with the new bios ISO is the best way to go. better than a floppy too, imho.

So just create a bootable cd and set that as the first drive to boot from?

All done, flashing the bios was easy the hard part was once i reset the bios to defaults windows wanted to be activated because the reset bios had swaped my boot drive to my old drive with a windows install on it had me puzzled for a while.

Anyone got any starter settings for overclocking ?
