Hi im looking to upgrade my AMD 3800+ 2.4GHz AM2 processor to another AMD processor this is because i don't want to spend more on a new motherboard for a small perfornace increase of an intel chip i was just wondering what should i go for. thank you :)

Well if youve got single core 3800+ then id prob go for a 4600+ X2 otherwise id stay as you are. But for the cost of the 4600+ you could get an E6300 and a cheapo conroe Mobo

Fastest dual core AM2? although your 2.4ghz is pretty fast, unless you do heavy multi-tasking you won't notice difference with a dual core CPU.

Increase in RAM or additional hard disc will be performance increase too (if doing two heavy HD I/O processes, use one disc per process) ie compressing a dvd and reading in another dvd image.

i am using an AM2 socket i dont really want a new mobo and an itel processor, the rest of the pc parts are:
2gig 800HMz RAM Ultra Low Lantency
10,000rpm 74gig 16mb cache raptor
BFG 7950 GT
i think thats all you need to know, ask if you need anymore info

Your system has plenty of RAM, fast hard drive, decent graphics. So in your case a dual core is the only suitable upgrade. But it's only worth it if you do heavy CPU multi-tasking at the same time, ie encoding music and playing a game.
