CPU Upgrade From a E6600

Firstly here’s my current PC specs:

Core 2 Duo E6600
Asrock mobo
4 gig DDR2 GSkill Ram
4890 Toxic 1gb
Corsair tx650w PSU
22 inch LG monitor 1680x1050

I’ve been happy with my pc, and I am surprised how long my E6600 has held out for 3 and half years. However it’s now starting to show its age, crysis, Empire total war Battlefield Bad Company 2 confirm this, with Bad Company 2 the worst out of the lot, fps really takes a beating when lots of things are going on at once, and this game loves its quad cores.

I am not up to date on the CPU market, but I know Intel are bring out there new line of processors at the end of this year. However I would like to upgrade now.

I was thinking about going down the cheaper route and getting a Q9950 with a nice new motherboard, since my current Asrock does not support any Quad core CPUs.

Or I could go down the route of spending money into and i7 setup, Intel Core i7 920, new motherboard and DDR3 ram which is more expensive.

At my resolution my graphics card is fine, just my CPU is letting down my current system, has any one got any advice on what I should do, go down the cheaper route or put my money into an i7 setup. Thanks for any suggestions.

Ive just bought a q9650 for a cheapish upgrade from my awesome e8500! Havent seen any need to upgrade but couldn't pass it up :P

But if you have to buy a new motherboard i would do an upgrade to i5.

I went from an E6750 to Q6600 last year. The dual only clocked to about 3GHz, whereas the quad I'm sure could do at least 3.8GHz with the right cooling. I can't see me needing any more CPU power for a while now.

Whats your budget though?

You could go down the Q6600 route as my old Q6600 never let me down (only a graphics card and a hard drive has so far, TOUCH WOOD) and OC it, even though I never seen the need for that myself.

I would get a decent cooler and then overclock it. I have en E6600 clocked to 3.4Ghz and I will not be upgrading this year. This should last you a few more months and you could save up some more for a better i7 system.

I went from an E6600 to a Q6700 and saw a massive difference when playing games that liked quads e.g. Dirt 2.

I'd suggest looking for a 2nd hand Q6600/Q6700. ;)
