CPU upgrade from I7 5960X?

6950X is a lot of dough for a little performance gain are my thoughts, I'm no hardware expert though.

Would a 6950X drop into my current MSI X99A Xpower AC? Its on the latest BIOS version available for it.

Been keeping tabs on this forthcoming Intel 7*** series but apparently very underwhelming?

how much longer would a 5960X still be considered a high end CPU? Yep I know, it does all I need to and more, but its more a wants than need thing, recently bought a Titan X Pascal to replace my Titan X Maxwell and I never needed that that either but wanted one :)

Honest question.

No point in replacing that cpu.

That's still a £1000 processor with 8 cores. You'd be getting a few percent ipc improvement and little else.

Overclocking it a little more would yeild more of a jump.

That will continue to be a high end cpu until 6/8 core hit the mainstream socket.

Still got my i7 3930K rocking everything very well. The problem here is the PCI-E lanes for me, anything I would buy other than the 6950K (which is very very expensive) is either a side or downgrade.

I think we can wait :)

Thanks for confirming what I suspected guys, its a bit disappointing CPU evolution has slowed down, but the plus side is with this CPU I don't have to or need to upgrade it for a while ... possibly another couple of years at least?

Thanks.

Hmmm, it's not THE best source but the top end AMD Zen/Ryzen chip (as just demo'd in the launch thing AMD were running) is basically on par with a 6900K (few... "serious" demos and some BF1, it's on par/fractionally ahead).

Wccftech (yeah - I'll not hold my breath either) have price speculation for that being a $499 chip launching in January.

It also clocks itself up to match your cooling.

Its not going to be an upgrade from a 5960x or though that would also be a side grade.

If you are going to upgrade to a 6950X you will only benefit if you can find something to use the extra cores on.

Having said that I do prefer using my 6950X based PCs compare to my 5960X based ones.

If you just want to upgrade something, what cooling do you have?

Can you overclock more?

If your a frequent upgrader push the vcore up a bit, it's not like you will keep it forever.

If you have money to burn, buy a nice sexy lian li case or upgrade your monitor, little point upgrading your core system unless it's under performing or you are running out of drive space.

Or go balls out and get a vive and a second gpu
