Hello guys I'm looking to upgrade my CPU from an amd phenom ii x2 555 to an amd phenom ii x6 1100t over Xmas (Santa is here!) my mobo is a gigabyte GA-MA78LMT-US2H 760g. I'm still learning what goes with what etc so just wondering if anyone can see any obvious clashes? Or perhaps recommend a better CPU for me? Has to be AM3 socket.. Thanks guys! Merry gaming....

Also my psu is only 500w should I look to upgrade that also?

What's your budget? Also what make/model is the PSU. 500W should be fine but you need a quality PSU :)

This is less than that X6 CPU:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i3-2100 3.10GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £95.99
1 x MSI H61M-E33 Intel H61 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard **B3 REVISION** £46.99
Total : £154.38 (includes shipping : £9.50).

Intel CPUs are generally the way to go, assuming your PC is compatible. It also depends what you are doing. If you're gaming, I think this CPU is better :)

You pretty much just ignored his requirements there then, good job.

I do not see any obvious clashes there, your motherboard supports all the X6 cpus. However, it might be worth looking at the Phenom X4 960T though, it's actually on this week only which could be handy. Reason I say this is, that if your board has the ability to unlock the extra cores, you will have just nabbed yourself a cut price X6 ...there are no guarantees with this of course but you have a good chance, since the 960T is basically an X6 with 2 cores disabled. Now I don't know if your board can unlock, my HTPC is running on a very similar board to yours, but mine is the later GA-MA785GMT-UD2H based on the 785G chipset, which does support unlocking, indeed I have had a Phenom II X2 550BE unlocked to a quad core on it for over 2 years now, no worries.

Food for thought anyway, however your original plan will work fine if you don't want to mess about at all.

Alright well maybe I was a little sarcastic there then, I've been like that all day for some reason, just one of those days where a good rant is brewing. I see people ignoring the ops requirements and suggesting something else entirely without ever really explaining why they have done so, so very often though. I don't really consider "I think it's better" as a good reason. But I was a bit short there so sorry about that.

I would have also suggested an Intel cpu if he didn't already have an AM3 board, but he does so it really only makes sense to go with AMD, as he said himself.

I see where you're coming from, and it equally annoys me when people ignore the OP. So I shouldn't be so hypocritical :P

Does it only make sense to go with AMD? I mean they implied they could afford a 1000T, which is £200 so would allow for that i3 system which is better than their current CPU and that CPU you suggested:

Just offering ideas anyway :)

But fair enough, I should have explained with more facts than opinion.

OP: To stay with your motherboard, the CPU suggested by Moeks is a good upgrade from yours :)

Loving the help here guys, im about to try to unlock the other cores on my cpu now so wish me luck. Any idea if i can check if ill be able to unlock the phenom x4? Ive looked on the gigabyte website...no such luck. Could i just assume that if I can unlock the x2 successfully to a x4 i can unlock the x4 to a x6??!
