Hi guys,

I have an off the shelf Dell Dimension 9150 with an Intel P4 640 3.2Ghz HT processor. Can anyone advise which, if any, faster CPU's I could use without changing the motherboard. I think a Pentium D 940 dual core might be possible with my existing chipset. I dream about an Extreme Edition but thats just it - a dream!

just bought in a precision 380 workstation which is same chipset I think, it has a 950 fitted and is pretty nippy for a bog std dell

The 640's a good cpu. Unless you use programs that utilise dual core there isn't much point. I do however advise you clear out the trial software which came with your 9150. Really does slow things down :)

But for the record I believe you have either the 945P or 945X chipset which is Pentium D 8xx and 9xx ready.

With the A04 bios you can take up to a Pentium D 960 3.6 dual core. Also sorts out the thermal tables on the cpu fan and the system runs extremely quiet. A03 bios good for up to Pentium D 950 3.4 dual core. For the 9 series you may need a new cpu duct / fan which Dell spare parts will sell you. However if you stick with older 8 series dual core, the cooling you have now should work fine.

Still, I think the cooler for some reason changed when they moved to the 900 series. Not sure why, but you might be able to get away with the old cooler.

Reason for upgrade

I'm currently crunching for Seti@home on the BOINC projects and since they went to SETI enhanced the crunch times have increased alarmingly. Its either a case of using more pc's or getting faster ones. Fron the specs the D940 with 2x2mb cache should give a 50% increase in computing power over the 640 with 1x2mb cache.

Now I know it will fit, I can pick one up from about £155, just need to decide if the cost is worth it.

Thanks very much for all the help.

Chris

At £155 it's worth it. Especially if you can sell off your 640 at a reasonable price. I advise you edit out the competitor name though. No competitor talk allowed on this forum :)
