Hi, im looking to upgrade my pc to handle newer games.

These are the current specs I have.

Operating System
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
CPU
Intel Core i5 2500K @ 3.30GHz 34 °C
Sandy Bridge 32nm Technology
RAM
8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 (11-11-11-28)
Motherboard
Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. Z68A-D3-B3 (Socket 1155) 38 °C
Graphics
VE228 (1920x1080@60Hz)
VE228 (1920x1080@60Hz)

Storage
931GB Seagate ST31000524AS ATA Device (SATA)
Optical Drives

Realtek High Definition Audio

Im thinking that upgrading the CPU would be best, Im not too keen on changing the motherboard so if anyone can recommend a socket 1155 CPU I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Tbh there's not much point in upgrading your cpu, particularly for gaming. A gpu upgrade would yield much better performance. Clocking your current cpu would help too if it isn't already.

Thanks for the reply, ive never got into overclocking but ill do some research now.

Could I see a big improvement from a gpu upgrade for around £300?

You'd see a huge upgrade in general system speed with an SSD.

For FPS gain, I'd get a 970 + a decent CPU cooler (easily achievable under £300). Comparison between the 960 and 970 is available here

If you find yourself being CPU bottlenecked then you can overclock your CPU too - it's really really easy to do.

Look into getting a 2600k, I upgraded and it definitely helps a lot in some games. Plus once you've sold your 2500k it should cost you £30-40 tops to upgrade.

To be honest, just keep what you got as upgrade from gtx 960 to gtx 970 wont be as big. If you can wait for pascal which will be released next year. I would say gtx 960 is still solid card for 1080p.

Also another +1 for SSD as it will be a nice upgrade which you will notice.

LOL :D What a post number

Get a decent cooler and clock that 2500k. Got mine to 4.7ghz and I doubt there will be any bottleneck there any time soon.

Totally agree with the above. Wait for Pascal. Overclock your 2500k. I hit 4.5GHz without any effort at all using an all in one water cooler.

I'm going to upgrade my gpu in the middle of next year and stick with my cpu until I see what Zen is like and what Intel has to offer at the time.

+1 for an SSD - this is an essential upgrade IMO.

This!

Does nothing to improve FPS, obviously, but cuts most load times down to 10-20%. If you're playing games that tend to load a lot of data, and have big scene switches, this will make a huge difference.
