CPU upgrade solution!?

Are you an AMD employee? :D

TBH I'd not want to drop too much cash on a dead end like AM3, £80 or so would be my limit too. Most old games didn't use many cores, this is becoming a thing of the past, so I'd look at an X6. Used 1055t/1070t would be my first port of call. Last year I picked up an X4 965 for £50, not sure what they'd go for today. Either would be a sizeable upgrade from an Athlon II X2. What model is your motherboard?

The 965 will clock higher, which is advantageous for older games and poorly coded new ones, whereas the 1055t has an extra 2 cores which will be put to use in the likes of Battlefield 3. It too can be overclocked but via bus rather than multiplier. I only recommended the 1055t as I have had a few (still do for work) and they are a cracking little chip. I see one on that popular auction site for £84, if you are patient you can save a lot if you hop on an auction at the right time

Do not consider paying new money for these chips! Second hand or just save for a whole system upgrade IMO
