Recently ive overcome my fears of overclocking my CPU (and enjoyed it) Ive realised my 3500+ is complete pants for it. Ive decided that im gonna get a new CPU (preferably compatible for my mobo) and clock the hell out of it. Here is a list of the CPUs my motherboard can support. I just want to know what the best value chip is that i can get the most performance out of, as my current 3500+ has only allowed me to go up from 2.2Ghz to 2.4Ghz ish. I was looking at the Opteron 165 as people seem to be getting a good increase out of them.
Or do you think its worth me just saving up my money and getting a Conroe or something? Im just wanting to get the most out of my PC as im getting a 8800GTS for xmas and would like to reduce bottlenecking as much as possible. Thanks everyone

Well its worth saving up for Conroe. But it is going to cost you more for sure. Also it will take time to save (I guess).
So knowing this at the end its up to you. The 165 are great chips and should clock to 3g. But the basic core 2 duo 6300 will do that and out perform it with ease.

Yeah that's fine.

Tho I would change the Command Rate to 1T.

I would suggest this too. Are you sure you can't overclock further just because your RAM won't overclock any further? Try lowering the divider to run your RAM closer to 200MHz and see if that lets your CPU go higher.

Chuffed! After reading up on a forum about my mobo and what everthing does ive got a little more out of my CPU, upped it to 2.42Ghz and nice and stable...not bad for stock volts and cooler :-) Overall im pretty happy learnt how to overclock (maybe not as much as i would have liked) which is something ive always wanted to know how to do. Got an extra 100 points on Mark06 aswell! yey for me!

iv just done basicly the same upgrade

from an opty 146 @ 3ghz to an opty 170 @ 2.9ghz

iv seen no real preformance increse but i only play games on the pc so i didnt expect to see much

I think it's the revision of the CPU; E3 is not an overclocker I think, E4 & E6 are what you should be looking at.

You are running your RAM @ 173Mhz!!?? Your Geil 1Gb kit can at least do 1:1 @ 220Mhz 2.5/3/3/6 1T IMO, unless it's a DDR333 or 266 kit.
