Hey all currently running 3700 and 3080 gpu combo.

I'm buying either 4090 ( if I can get one or 4080 16gb ) gpu to replace the 3080.

Would upgrading to the 5800x3d cpu make any difference at my gaming res of 2560x1440?

I usually play older games anyway for example i'm currently on a Fallout 4 playthrough and my monitor can do 240 hz so high FPS is of benefit to me.

Regards

For normal people, I'd say no it's not worth it, but if you're replacing a 3080 with a 4090 at 1440p 240hz I think you're the sort of person who'll pay a premium for the best stuff, so yeah you may as well have a current gen cpu to make sure it's all running as smoothly as possible.

Personally if it was me I wouldn't be in a rush to change stuff if the pc is less than '2 generations' old (so 3xxx and 5xxx)... I'd likely wait at least another generation/release.

The only thing I'd maybe consider is things like a cheap 5xxx series upgrade, more storage and/or ram at this point in time.

The 5800X3D is a decent amount faster than a 3700X, so definitely worth it from a technical point, especially for gaming.

Why…
Rtx 4080 16GB is likely to be about 30% faster than 3080 and the 12GB is likely to be slower than 3080 or on par. It’s a waste of money

If you want to upgrade the CPU, I wouldn’t even bother with 5800X or the 5800X3D just slot in a 5700X and you are good. At 2K res you are unlikely to be hitting the CPU bottleneck but the zen3 architecture will give you better experience. £440 5800X3D vs £250 5700X

I went 3700x to 5800x3d and I run on a B350F motherboard with a 3080Ti and the performance is just better on every game for me, everything is smoother even windows feels more responsive.

I think the 3700x was a really big bottleneck for the 3080 cards even at 4k.

Just did a flight in London on FS2020 at 4k my frames were 20 with the 3700x and now 50fps with the 5800x3d
