CPU upgrade

I can play CoD4 and Crysis using the same CPU as you but with a 7600GT and also 2Gb of ram. Previously, I was using a 6800GT and I suffered with lag too whatever resolution and setting's I opted for.
Have you tried benchmarking your PC using 3dmark? You can compare your system with other's when the bench is complete.

No i've not tried that. i'll give that a go too, see what kinka score i get.

Clock the 3800+.

I bought one 2 days ago for £30 odd quid and it is currently at 34deg idle at 2.6ghz with v1.375. Will try UT3 later on and tell you how it runs (ran awful with my old single core 3700+)

Ok i've done a 3DMark06 test and got the following results.

3DMark Score 7476 3DMarks
SM 2.0 Score 3305 Marks
SM 3.0 Score 4039 Marks
CPU Score 1458 Marks

I got a 3800 system upstairs that plays crysis just fine with no lags at all.

I have not pushed it mind you and its a clean system that only plays games on a LAN but its still more than plenty capable.

Id like to take this opportunity to mention one thing...

My No.2 PC Specs are basic :-

Opteron 175 @ 2.75Ghz
Asus A8N-SLI
2x1GB Crucial DDR400
ATI Radeon X1800XT
Audigy 1

I have just upped it to another Conroe setup

E2180
Abit AB9
4x512MB Geil
Save GFX & Audio & HDs etc etc

I have to say that I really wished that I stuck with the Opteron.

This PC is a pile.

I have got rid of the Abit AB9 Mobo because I found it had no real grunt, but now the CPU is not all that impressive. and the Mobo is at this time a Gigabyte S3 ( Cheaper DS3 )

Dont get me wrong, the CPU isa great CPU for the price, but overall, gaming etc, its pailing against the Opteron, Games simply are not as smooth or slick, I really am not stupid enough to fall for framerate BS when games dont play any better at 120FPS than they do at 100FPS. I am still in 2 minds that I will be going back to the Opteron setup and the Wife can have this conroe.... Ist a great CPU and surely its better than the opteron, but for what I need out of it, it has been a waste of money.

ut3 recomends a 2.4ghz duel core chip. It doesn't specify brand though. I would try and oc your 3800+ to 2.4 before splashing out on a new system. explore the hardware you have before you invest in new stuff. The longer you make your hardware last, the better the same money you would spend upgrading now will buy you in the future. (does that last bit make sense..? lol)

No, in the case of UT3 and many other such apps, when they say 2.4 or 2400, they mean that in the sense of the older P4 ways... Pentium based 2.4Ghz or AMD based 2400... The AMDs are much more efficient than the Pentium 4 and below.

Had they meant that it needs a 2.4Ghz CPU, WTF would that mean for Core2Duos ?? - they are more than twice as efficient than the P4s are.

No, an AMD x2 3800, this is more than enough for UT3.

In my honest opinion, clocking the CPU is not the answer in this case... Sure, it will make the CPU a tad nippier, but thats all it will do.

I would accept the system AS-IS, and leave it alone and consider the Intel path.

Although, my No.2 PC went from an X2 3800, through an Opteron 175 and on to an E2180 and to be quite honest with you, its not playing games any better... Not really.

I think I was happier when it was the opteron and Im still 50-50 on going back to the Opty for My No.2 system.

I still have my Q6600 as my no1 of course and there is no way I would be stupid enough to go back to AMD at this time because no AMD on the plantet is as quick, but that will change soon probably.
