CPU Upgrade

Below is a chart TH put together recently, gives you an idea of the real world performance ranging from past and present games and even 3d bench mark scores thrown in for good measure, all this is added up and put in one single chart.

look where the HD2900XT 512 ends ;)
An X1900XT 512 would slot between the X1900XTX 512 and X1950XTX 256

The HD3850 has always looked good on paper buddy :)

Also catalyst drivers are still struggling with anti-aliasing, if only they could nail it like they have with crossfire on current drivers.

Out with the Old, in with the Mid-Range

That's an even faster X1950XTX vs the humble HD3850, bear in mind actual FPS will be lower on a socket 939 system but the comparison is still relevant.

For £60 or less (after sale of ye ancient GPU) the new Radeon is looking a nice prospect don't you think?

All your base are belong to me! :o

To be honest, if you can wait - then wait - you'll be much happier getting a full-on upgrade later than a little boost now. If you can't - then the suggestions in this thread are more than wise.

I however, would suggest you wait it out :)

There we see quite a decent difference but it doesn’t warrants an upgrade. And like you say, that difference will close more so when you strap it in to an old amd rig.

TBH from a modern card I'd want more than 33fps at 1600x1200 in oblivion, it’s not exactly a new game is it.
Also run Quake Wars at 4aa and 16af at 16x12 and it loses over 12fps! its only just squeezing out 50fps as it is without aa.

The HD cards really do get hammered by anti-aliasing, and it is reflected in pretty much every game out there, with the 3850 being hurt the most.

Your a Joker! :D

However if Luke really is an RTS gamer then thats a good suggestion, if he is an FPS gamer that suggestion is not so good! :o

I don't think throwing good money after bad is the right move i.e don't buy another socket 939 CPU, get a 'modern' graphics card for the love of god!

You just can't get the staff these days, I dunno :p

[edit] when u say 3800+ did you mean X2 3800+ btw?

X2 offcourse, hence my whole dual core point...
