Hi,

i have a amd athlon 64 x2 dual core processor 4200+, with a asus m2n-sli deluxe am2 motherboard and a geforce 9600gt graphic card.

I'm looking to upgrade the cpu to a AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Socket AM2 (2.7GHz) 1MB L2 Cache OEM Processor,
for gaming just to give me a little bit extra power on games like arma 2 (where i have to play with all the setting on low and still get jerky screen movement at times).

Would i notice any difference and is it as simple as just taking the old chip out and placing the new one in or will i have to format the hd for the new chip to be recognised.

Thanks for anyhelp.

Double check your current BIOS can take the new cpu, if not you may need to update to the latest rev.

Remove the old chip, install new one, I would personaly do a CMOS reset then boot, check the BIOS settings for ram and hard disc boot order then go on to booting windows as normal, this should hopefully detect the new CPU, load drivers and quick reboot and all should be well.

Don't forget some fresh thermal compound :)

You will notice next to no difference & your far better of saving your money & clocking the 4200+ to 2.7 which is easyly possible with a small volt boost, you could even get the 4200+ stable at 2.5 at stock volts.

& yes its as simple as poping the new chip in & doing as RJC says if you decide to change the chip

I used to have one of those boards :) Upgraded the CPU to a Athlon X2 7750+ before upgrading it and it worked fine with the latest Bios (currently 1701), it also supports the Athlon X2 7850+ and can support the original Phenom CPUs, the fastest being the Phenom X4 9950, make sure the the 125W version though.

I would not go for the 5200+ myself, its and old chip, would be better with the Athlon X2 7850 :
