If i want to upgrade from a AMD phenom X3 to a AMD black edition X4, can i just pull the old chip out and put hte new one in and it will work fine?

the only way to find out for defo is to check what bios you have and check on your MB manufacturers website and see what that bios supports in the way of cpus you might have to update the bios to fit the black edition.
 
I'd guess you should be okay by doing this, as they're both Am3 chips. Just make sure don't have any damaged pins :)

+ Could you tell us what the MoBo is? :D
