Hi all

I currently have a skylake i5 6600k, running clock speed at the moment.
I've recently got into 3D printing, and designing things on my PC, but occasionally i get a bit of lag, a couples of seconds usually.
Is it worth upgrading to a i7 7700k for example? I believe i can put that straight into my Z170 board.

Cheers

The 7700K should work in the Z170 board as long as the BIOS is updated. The CPU looks to be around £300, for that money buy a Ryzen 3600 and a B450 board imo.

If you can get a 7700K for £100 or less second hand it might be worth it, but honestly I still don't think I'd bother. You're better off selling your current mobo/cpu/ram and putting it toward a 3600/b450 as suggested by Nghtmare.

Here's a review of the 3600 vs the 9400f (the review also features the 7700K):

For the money you'll end up spending doing a CPU jump, you might as well sell your current and enjoy a platform upgrade and a generally better experience. Also note how the review talks about games feeling smoother, there's more than just raw framerates to consider:

The Core i5-9400F is a good processor today, but when you consider the platform, future upgrade options are slim. In two years you’ll ideally want more than six threads and you will be stuck to second hand 8700K, 9700K or 9900K processors for a more powerful drop-in replacement. Unfortunately we don't believe the prospects will be great then either. Hoping over to eBay we found the cost of Core i7-7700K completed listings -- that is 7th-gen Core i5 owners looking to upgrade -- spending Ryzen 5 3600 money on the 36 month old quad-core.

But back to today's comparison, the Ryzen 5 3600 destroys the Core i5-9400F in core-heavy games and applications. It currently costs 33% more, but it was often 50% faster in applications and provided roughly 30% gains in modern games.

Its about time AMD caught up, last time I had an AMD was when they first released the Athlon 64s skt 939's lol.
Think I should save for a proper upgrade instead then!

Cheers all.
