I've never actually upgraded from a CPU to another one before in the same system; only new builds have I installed them.

My current CPU is a 939 AMD 64 3800+ newcastle (single core).

My new CPU is a X2 4800+ (939 too)

Is it basically just a plug and play thing? Whip the old one out, stick the new on in and it should work? Or is there more to it than that (minus the reseating etc)

Done!

All installed and reseated. Task Manager appears to show 2 CPUs which is a good thing I suppose :p

Any other tests I can do to make myself feel better for getting a Dual Core eventually?

well...ocing the crap out of it is always fun :D

do some benchmarks and compare them to your single core scores if you have any(i.e. 3dmark06)

I'm amazed by how much FPS I get compared to my single core 3800!!!! Must have doubled or trebled!

If you run any games with multi-threading support like Quake 4 then you'll notice a VERY significant difference.

Really! I though single core was better for gaming in most cases.

Single core isn't "better". It's just that single threaded games and applications have no use for the extra CPU so the unused CPU just chills out.

I.E. a 3700 single core and a 4400x2 dual core should perform the exact same in single threaded applications...but multi-threaded apps will make the 3700 really struggle while the 4400 will be doing what it does best!

I've been able to put certain processes on to a seperate corem thus enabling pretty much just the game to a core all on its own.

I was told there's a Windows Dual Core fix that I should download? Is this true or are they winding me up? What should I google?

Theres 2 available, one from AMD and one from MS.

I used the AMD one because I thought it was better, it can be downloaded from the AMD Website. Its the Dual Core Optimizer that you want.
