Commando CPU Vcore 1.65. Problem - SOLVED!

I am setting up my first water cooled rig and went straight for 3.6GHz with my E6600 (400x9). At the moment I have Vcore set in the BIOS at 1.65v, RAM at 2.1v (800MHZ 1:1) and NB Voltage at 1.4 and eveything seems stable with Prime95. Lowering the CPU Vcore will cause Vista to crash or not load. Temps using Intel TATS is 35 idle and 70 at 100% on both cores.
So to me the max temps seem well with limits (but why the big variation between max load and idle?) and the rig seems stable. So am I going to do any harm running at 1.65v (most people I see are runing 1.4-1.45v). Only ever played with AMD CPU's before so some of this is new to me.

BTW whats VID in Core Temp Beta0.94? It reports 1.325v and Voltage on CPUZ is showing 1.056v?

1.65v is a bit high. Even for water.

What's the best you can do at 1.55v?

I have it at 3.2Ghz (400x8) at 1.60v (BIOS) at the moment and am running Prime95 at the moment. Max Load temps on TATS is down to 61. If its stable I'll try lowering it further

I don't want to fry my CPU but it seems a shame to go for a lower clock when I have it stable higher & within referance temperatures.

I mate

first of all you have a great setup,top quality hardware,but I think it deserves a better PSU
for overclocking and stability of a sistem ,the quality of the PSU is essential

with this kind of hardware,if it was me, I bet in a better PSU with 700/850w from a quality manufacturer

with that cpu,at 400x9, if you need more than 1.5 / 1.55Vcore to get it stable,something is wrong

1.65 Vcore is to much ,even with water
this kind o Vcore is good for phase change ,with sub- zero temps

only my opinion

Thanks, I was thinking of a larger PSU after geting the GTX, The Hipper was somethng I had, but I hadn't considered that that it may be contributing to the problem. Could it just be down to the CPU, I know they are not all made the same.

Nope they not. But 1.6v for 3.2Ghz sounds a little odd. Most e6600s will do 3.2ghz on a little more than stock volts.

What's the vdroop like on the Commando?

Not sure how much the Vdroop is but I imagine its the same as the other Asus 965 boards. Ok I am down to 1.475v at 3.2GHz (400x8). I am running Prime95 for 30 min and if stable lowering the VCore by 1 step. So it looks like I can get 3.2GHz at a sensible voltage but I need a big jump to to get 3.6 (400x 9). Does this sound like it could be a PSU problem or a CPU problem?

3.6ghz is a watershed for e6600s. Most don't reach it, even with good cooling.

~3.55ghz is about the average clock.

I would try to find whatever it's stable at at no more than 1.55v and leave it there.

Just an update guys, I changed my PSU to to an Enermax Galaxy, lapped the CPU heat spreader a bit (it was concave), ditched the the heatpipes from the Noth and south bridges and fitted heatsinks with a fan on the Northbrige. now getting 3.6 Ghz at 1.45v VCore, North Bridge voltage 1.4v in Bios and 56 degress under full load with TATS

That's a lot better

Now you should try for 3.8ghz. You have some headroom on your vcore, and there's no point in watercooling if you're not going to push it

Another update, I fitted a NB water block and added some heatsinks to the VRMs. I did a little more lapping to remove what was left of the Alu on the IHS, and what a differeance its made! Temps under load are now down to 46 degrees at 3.6Ghz (400x9). I even had her at 4.05Ghz but with 1.625V, but still only 60 degrees at full load under TAT. I'm sure I can get the voltages down if I did the Vdroop mod. I have her now settled at 3.6Ghz as this will be a 24/7 rig. I am pretty impressed with the Commando MB now!

Good job ,mate!

As I said before ,you have a very good set of hardware.

The Asus Commando( intel 965P) with the Crucial Ram with Micron D9 chips works very well

You have watercooling in almost everithyng it is nedeed ,so this helps a lot to maintainthe sistem stable

My sistem is similar-Asus P5B delx and Ballistyx PC2 5300- and i have a similar overclock with my Xeon 3050 wich is a " brother" of the E6400( same specs)

right now i have the pc on for a week,24/7, completely stable , with 3600 mhz (450x8)
I dont have WC- a little beat expensive for me- but the Tuniq T 120 does a great job too
only thing i dislike is the chipset( northbridge) is a beat hot
But ,until now ,everithing seems running rock solid!

note: this Orthos test is done with the lateral of pc case open
