I have the latest version of cpu-z.
However when I use my o/c e6850 [400x9] it frequently shows it as 2400 [x6], skipping upto 3600 [x9].

TAT says chip is at 3600.

Anyone can tell me why please?

It's something called "Speedstep", when your computer doesn't need heavy processing it drops the multiplier down so that the chip runs cooler, as it doesn't need as much power to do... well, nothing :) As soon as you start needing more CPU resources the speed steps up again. You can disable this if you want from the BIOS, under an option called "C1E". CPU-Z always gives the recording of the CPU freq. as it's current amount, taking into account Speedteep. Other programs like Core Temp and TAT however do not, and give the maximum amount even if Speedstep is on.

Thats normal, this allow the cpu to run cooler whilst at idle. If you look around the forums, this has been covered many times before. In bios you can disable EIST and another option which allows the cpu to run at the x9 24/7.

But if I was you, I would leave it where it is.
