CPU-Z showing [email protected]

Hi,

Just checked in CPU-Z and noticed my CPU at 1.6GHZ, it then went to 2.4GHZ and back down again.

I checked my temps in TAT and Core#1 and Core#2 are 27oC idle, so it's not throttling.

Everest and XP info is showing it at 2.4GHZ

Any ideas please?

[EDIT]

Just realised that it seems to be adjusting itself... 1.6GHZ idle, 2.4GHZ under load (TAT load). I want the 2.4GHZ all the time so I guess there's some option to turn it off.

Thanks,
Craig.

Disable EIST (intel enhanced speedstep) and C1E (enhalnced halt state), both these lower the cpu's multi when idle.

Is this a problem??? I thought it was designed to do that???

Rusty

it is designed to do that... but a lot of ppl on these forums want maximum speed all the time, so we disable them...

Speedstep is fine, it changes up the mhz in msec's - so doesnt effect performance, yet it saves you power and makes your system cooler.

ye and runs supreme commander like a dog

Well you can turn it off from within the OS if you're playing something it doesnt work well with.

Hey, we gotta stop the global warming and all the nonsense aint we? ;)

Speedstep somehow on my pc doesnt work ok, c1e on the other hand does, drops my cpu to 3 ish ghz on idle, and back to 3.9 on even 5 % cpu usage, imo its handy when leaving on pc 12+ hrs a day to save a bit on energy...

Nothing against it myself Rusty, but was just replying to the OP's question givign a solution.

I love speedstep !. Saves power and keeps my pc cool n quiet when browsing the web etc. CPUz is good for watching the speed switch.

Supreme commander runs like a dog !?. Something wrong there, should keep the cpu busy hence max clock. Had troubles myself once, fixed it by setting XP's power options correctly and using a util called 'rmclock', you can change the switching levels with this util...I've been running Stalker with everything at max (1600*1200), smooth & nice - speedstep is well & truly on.

Yeh, if you want to get rid - switch off in bios & set your XP 'power scheme' to "always on".

Regards

Thank you :)

I've been checking it out and it does seem to instantly change the clock speed from 1.6GHZ to 2.4GHZ.

But I'm still wondering about it... surely it'd slow down the startup time of smaller applications or even stuff like opening the start menu?

But seriously, there's not much point for me, especially if I'm sticking with stock speeds. This CPU uses less power than my old PCs 3GHZ Prescott anyway IIRC ;)

However, it does keep it nice and cool :p:

Smaller apps dont even use the cpu much, so even if it took a while for it to increase the mhz, it wouldnt matter as it still runs quick at the lower settings, its not like 20mhz or something - at 1.6ghz is the same speed as a E2140, ie around the same speed as a AMD x2 3800.

If you run Vista, you can see in the resource manager the cpu mhz increase dynamically depending on cpu load.
