Bought some live crabs today thought I'd share for anyone who would like to try.

Two live crabs about 1.2kg each at £7 kg

Pan of water with loads of salt. Sea water if you can.

You can chuck them in the freezer for an hour or two or drown them in fresh water or use something blunt like a screwdriver.

How much edible meat do you get off a 1.2kg crab out of interest?

Not a huge amount, I love crab, but it's so over priced. When they are relatively easy to catch. Why can't I live on the coast.

Quick Google says 20% and upwards depending on size of claws, the bigger the claw the better. Lobster gets around 40% due to claws and tail.

I'm a total noob when it comes to cooking crabs.

Do you mean that they're best left after cooking for 48 hours or that's the maximum time to leave them? If not, is there some minimum time before eating that is recommended? Is there a maximum time for them to be best too? :)

Shame about the the lack of yield but not too shocking I guess. I also live inland so my experiences with seafood are minimal compared to those that live near the coast.

Sorry no eat within 48 hours if left. Maybe longer if you separated and picked it early but it's best to let them completely cool after cooking.

I'm going to sound like I'm super anal here but...

When you say picked it early is it best to leave them to completely cool simply so you don't burn your fingers?
