cracked plastic

The plastic casing around the keyboard on my Macbook has just cracked on the bottom left corner. I've also still got the discolouring issue.

I won't have time or the spare cash to pop into the apple store this week so I thought I'd ask on here. Has anyone had this problem corrected before? What kinda price am I looking at? A mate reckons it'll be up to £100 to get the plastic cover replaced.

I've had it since the week they came out so my warranty obviously expired long ago.

Thanks!

When I had mine done about two weeks ago at Apple in Meadowall I asked what would happen if it happened when my warranty expired in October.

I was told that normally they will still repair it free of charge even if out of warranty for the cracked case issue. I suppose this depends if you get someone nice who looks at it.

From what I remember the parts on the invoice said £64 + labour. So about £100 - £125 if they were to charge.

Mine cracked along the bottom edge where the top of the screen touches it when closed. It's a common problem that Apple know about so you could and should argue that they should fix it out of warranty.

No way am I paying that for a piece of covering, not at the moment anyway. The crack isn't that bad and the discolouring I can live with. I'll take it to them when I get the chance, see what they say. Won't be paying that price in a hurry though.

Thanks anyway! :)

Its a design flaw. Happened to my girlfriends computer last month. Took it into the apple store and the guy didnt look one bit surprised.

If you are still within apple care then they will replace it for you in no time.

If you are not then you will need to fight with them.

Fightings bad! Do your best to get it to an actual Apple store rather than a reseller. That way, there's no way that they can ignore the problem and put it down to misuse. Apple know about the problem, the resellers don't. And a note to anybody else who encounters the problem, the longer you leave it, the more it looks like the case has been slammed too hard. If you take it to an Apple store as soon as you notice the problem, they'll be more likely to repair it warranty rather than if you leave it for a couple of months and it gets really damaged. It does only effect a small percentage of MacBooks however, so it's not the most likely thing to happen to your laptop!
