Crackling noise behind scuttle panel/cowl trim

first thing i would be doing is removing trim from that area, even if you cant smell burning it could still be cables shorting and then getting hot . trust me a loom fire is not what you want.
used to repair loads , you dont realise how bad till you start taking the covering off.
 
It sure is, such a relief to diagnose it. It would stop if I disconnected the battery. Ordered a secondhand one from eBay for not very much. Fingers crossed it fixes the problem
